Dance 4 Peace develops 4 key social, emotional and civic competencies in youth:

Dance 4 Emotional awareness

Dance 4 Active communication and dialogue

Dance 4 Diversity, cooperation and empathy

Dance 4 Anger management and mediation

Our program is a grade-level specific, progressive curriculum that builds from semester to semester to impart social, emotional and civic competencies. The curriculum is based on extensive research in the areas of social and emotional learning and peace education. Students move through the curriculum, eventually becoming Junior PeaceMovers and then PeaceMovers, teaching back lessons learned experientially through mentorship and leadership, forever a part of the global Dance 4 Peace network.

Trained PeaceMovers facilitate the curriculum and are ambassadors for Dance 4 Peace in their local classrooms. PeaceMovers are dancers who have interdisciplinary backgrounds in peace education, social work, conflict resolution, and education. They guide classroom activities and connect other global Dance 4 Peace classrooms through the HubDanceXchange-- our choreography exchange.

Students showcase lessons learned in a performance for the community each semester, where they have the opportunity to demonstrate peacebuilding skills through dance in their classroom and other Dance 4 Peace classrooms across the globe.

Dance 4 Peace monitors and evaluates effectiveness through pre- and post- test evaluations with facilitators, students, teachers, school officials, and parents; movement-based evaluations with students; facilitator evaluations; through video, photos, and other documentation; and monitoring the degree to which the program is implemented as intended.

Dance 4 Peace ensures programmatic sustainability by positioning ourselves as a holistic program with both parents and teachers. We require teachers present in the classroom in order to gain a Dance 4 Peace toolbox of skills, language and activities they are empowered to impart even when PeaceMovers are not in the classroom. We offer both teacher trainings and parent trainings to ensure that Dance 4 Peace is sustainable in whatever community it is implemented.

“I think our students gain a lot from not only the physical, energetic, and innovative aspect of the program but also learn more about respecting each other, different ideas, and different ways of expressing themselves. The curriculum empowers students by giving them a platform to engage in service in their own communities and also give back to and connect with others.”
